Intelligent Speed Assistance

Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) has been mandatory in all new cars sold in the European Union since July 2022. The system is designed to help drivers maintain legal speed limits, improving road safety and reducing the risk of accidents. ISA uses a forward-facing camera and satellite navigation to detect speed limits and can gently and progressively limit engine power if the vehicle exceeds the permitted speed. This intervention encourages safer driving without sudden or abrupt braking.

Drivers retain full control, as the system can be overridden at any time, allowing the vehicle to accelerate if necessary. Research suggests that the use of ISA can lead motorists to drive more carefully and consistently within speed limits, potentially preventing up to one-fifth of road fatalities. The technology is particularly effective in built-up areas, average speed zones, and locations where speed limits frequently change, helping to reduce speeding-related incidents.

The system has been widely well-received, with around 95% of buyers reporting positive experiences, highlighting its value as a safety tool rather than a restriction. By combining real-time monitoring with gentle vehicle intervention, ISA represents a practical and increasingly common measure to support safer driving habits and improve overall road safety across Europe.
