Advanced / Autonomous Emergency Braking

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) is an advanced safety system designed to automatically apply the brakes if a collision is imminent and the driver does not respond in time. AEB can detect and help prevent collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, providing an important additional layer of protection in everyday driving. Research has shown the effectiveness of this technology; a 2015 study found that AEB can reduce rear end crashes by up to 38% under real world conditions.

AEB systems typically rely on lidar, radar, cameras, or a combination of these technologies to continuously monitor the road ahead and identify potential hazards. When a collision risk is detected, the system can warn the driver and, if necessary, intervene to slow or stop the vehicle. Most new cars now include AEB as standard, and safety experts consider it as vital as seat belts in terms of reducing injury and fatalities. Thatcham Research estimates that widespread use of AEB could save around 1,100 lives and prevent more than 120,000 casualties in the UK over the next ten years.

To ensure effectiveness, AEB systems are tested using specialised targets such as the Global Vehicle Target (GVT), which can be easily repaired or reassembled after impact. This testing helps manufacturers refine the technology and maintain high safety standards across all new vehicles.
